Panasonic named its two new Android handsets ELUGA, an acronym of sorts for “elegant user-oriented gateway,” to symbolize the slim pair of phones that aim to combine both design and function. The electronics manufacturer introduced the ELUGA and ELUGA Power handsets this past week at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, extending the number of Android devices unveiled at the show from the likes of LG, Samsung, HTC, Sony, Viewsonic and Huawei, just to name a few. While most handset manufacturers claim the phone already combines design and functionality, the features on the ELUGA phones measure up. One standout feature: both phones are both waterproof and dustproof, so you can go about your business and not worry about every little spill near your handset. The phones are compliant with the international standard IP57 water and dustproofing standard. You might not want to take either phone for a swim, but the ELUGA line can withstand up to a depth of one meter (3.28-feet) of water for up to one hour. The phones are also protected up to 75 micrometers of dust for a period of up to eight hours. To start with design, the D-shape, slim form factor of the ELUGA is designed not to ruin the line of clothes when in your pocket.
Mobiado has officially unveiled its second Android touchscreen phone, which was designed together with Aston Martin. The new handset is called Mobiado Grand Touch Aston Martin, and features the car maker’s logo on the back case. Like the previous Mobiado Grand Touch, the Grand Touch Aston Martin is just a Samsung Nexus S dressed in an expensive case. The device’s body is “precision CNC machined” from solid aircraft aluminum, or solid brass with rose / yellow gold – depending on the version. Ebony wood or mother of pearl (MOP) is inserted below the metallic surface. Other materials used include sapphire crystal and stainless steel. All Mobiado Grand Touch Aston Martin models are sold unlocked, and come with quad-band GSM (850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz) and tri-band HSDPA (900 / 1700 / 2100 MHz) connectivity. As for their other features, these are the regular Nexus S ones, including a 4 inch WVGA display, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, 5MP rear camera VGA front-facing camera, 1GHz single-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 16GB of internal memory, and Android Gingerbread.
Mobiado didn’t disclose the price of its Grand Touch Aston Martin, but it’s certainly not a low one.
HTC has yet to release a 5 inch device. This beautiful and very thin slate has a unique feature, that allows it to measure the temperature of its surroundings. There’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with Sense 4.0 on board, as well as WiFi b/g/n and 60 GHz connectivity. HTC Lion EX is a quad core 2.5GHz handset with a Qualcomm S4 processor, HSPA+ connectivity and a 5 inch 720p HD Gorilla Glass display. NFC and two new functions, uTemperature and uSlide are also in the mix here.
The slim and stylish handset runs Android‘s Gingerbread OS. The handset exhibits clean and sharp lines with the design house’s signature Saffiano pattern, typically etched into its leather goods, adorning the back of the phone. A distinct PRADA influence is evident on the phone’s design. A minimal number of hardkeys help keep the design sleek. It measures a mere 8.5 mm thick. An LG feature, Floating Mass Technology, is said to optically enhance the thinness of the phone. The handset features a 4.3-inch screen with an 800 nit NOVA High Brightness Display screen.
HTC and Verizon Wireless have announced a new Beats Audio-integrated Android 2.3.4-based smartphone, the HTC Rezound. It’s also the company’s first smartphone to incorporate a 1280 x 720 (720p) resolution screen. The new Verizon-exclusive droid supports the LTE network and will be HTC‘s first Beats Audio-improved offering in the U.S. market. The new arrival will be sold with lightweight Beats headphones with built-in microphone and on-cable remote. The Rezound offers an 8-megapixel camera located at the back equipped with autofocus, dual LED flash and an f/2.2 28mm wide-angle lens.
The first Android Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone look too good to be missed. Presumed specs are a 4.65 inch 720p display, a dual core 1.5GHz, a 5 or 8 megapixel camera and at least 16GB of internal memory. I’m really curios how thin this curved smartphone is and how round are its curves in comparison with the Xperia Arc and Nexus S.

The incorporation of a stylus and the 1280×800 high-resolution Super AMOLED screen give the thin Android phone additional functionality by way of both sketching and note-taking. Samsung showed its new Note smartphone today at IFA, just 12 months after it showed the Galaxy Tab to great acclaim, and when history judges the 5.3″ supersized smartphone it just might play a much greater role in the development of the personal computer form factor.
